How do you swallow Gastrografin?
The test involves drinking a solution of Gastrografin which shows up on an X-Ray. This contrast medium is non-toxic, and shows up as white on a plain X-Ray taken during or soon after swallowing. The gastrografin is detected on the inside of the oesophagus and gives an idea of its lining surface.
What happens if you aspirate Gastrografin?
Gastrografin is a water soluble contrast media preferred to barium to look for GI leaks as it is less likely to cause peritoneal complications in the presence of a perforation. Gastrografin, however, has been reported to induce pulmonary edema and fatal respiratory failure after accidental aspiration in adults.
Can Gastrografin make you sick?
The most frequently reported adverse reactions were vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, erythema, a sensation of pain, and a general feelings of warmth on intravascular administration.
Can you drink Gastrografin undiluted?
Gastrografin must not be administered undiluted in patients with suspected possibility of aspiration or broncho-oesophageal fistula, since hyperosmolarity may cause acute pulmonary oedema, chemical pneumonia, respiratory collapse and death.
Can I eat after taking Gastrografin?
On the morning of your scan take another 20mls of Gastrografin, you can have some tea or coffee without milk and any medications that you take. Do not eat anything until after your scan. We recommend bringing a snack with you to your appointment and you can eat this once the scan is completed.
What happens if Gastrografin is aspirated?

Can I drink water after taking Gastrografin?
Take the remaining bottle of Gastrografin, diluted in water. Drink as much fluid as possible e.g. water, juice, tea, coffee, but no milk in any of your drinks. Do not eat anything else. Breakfast: A slice of dry toast.
